Discover the Insider Tips to Youthful Skincare: Distinguishing the Winners from the Losers”

As someone who values healthy skin, I’m excited to share tips on maintaining and aging gracefully. One way to aid the process is by using anti-aging skincare products. Board-certified Plastic Surgery expert Manish Shah has generously shared his knowledge on the best products to fulfill our anti-aging needs. Keep reading to discover more.

Manish Shah, a board-certified plastic surgeon, emphasizes that certain anti-aging products or ingredients work better than others and can significantly enhance the appearance of the skin. However, it is crucial to note that in-office procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, lasers, or cosmetic surgery produce results that numerous anti-aging products cannot fully replicate. Moreover, some products may not live up to their promises.

Have you ever wondered why most products fail to deliver on their promises? It’s because most products that claim to tighten skin rely on film-forming agents to achieve their effects. These agents create a film on the skin which can make it “feel” tighter, but the results are only temporary. You won’t see any significant lifting of sagging skin, but many women are convinced that the product works. Dr. Shah reminds us that while “feeling” tighter is not the same as real change, using products that work will bring us closer to the desired results.

Dr. Shah says sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is the most effective anti-aging cream. This helps prevent skin cancer and protects against UVA rays, which can lead to collagen loss and wrinkles. It is recommended to reapply every 2 hours, and for convenient touch-ups, consider carrying a powder sunblock in your pocketbook. Dr. Shah recommends Colorescience as a favorite powder sunblock and suggests looking for base sunscreens with active ingredients like titanium or zinc oxide.

Retinoids

Dr. Shah, a skincare expert, recommends using retinol to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and boost collagen production. He suggests that over-the-counter retinol products are effective and recommends Neutrogena’s retinol product as a good option. Additionally, prescription-strength retinol such as Retin-A can also be used for more severe cases. Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that stimulates the production of collagen and can also improve skin texture and tone. It is important to follow the instructions and use retinol products as directed to avoid any adverse effects.

Glycolic acid

Dr. Shah, a skincare expert, recommends that patients alternate between retinoid and glycolic treatments every other night to achieve optimal results. Retinoid is a vitamin A derivative that has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and sun damage. Glycolic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid that works by exfoliating the top layers of the skin and promoting cell turnover, which can help to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and sunspots. By switching between these two products every other night, patients can reap the benefits of both treatments and achieve healthier, more youthful-looking skin.

Vitamin C

is a great antioxidant that reduces free radical damage, is excellent for anti-aging, and helps brighten the skin. Dr. Shah recommends it in the morning, under sunblock, or at night if patients are too sensitive to tolerate retinoids and glycolic acid.

 Ceramides

Do you know what ceramides are? According to Dr. Shah, they are fat found in the outer layer of cells that help keep skin cells together. This forms a protective barrier that makes skin look plump and retains moisture. As we age, our ceramide levels decrease, resulting in less skin turnover, drier skin, and damage. To combat this, it’s recommended to use a moisturizer that contains ceramides to help restore moisture and fortify the skin’s natural barrier. Using a ceramide-containing moisturizer daily on your whole body can help your skin look and feel younger.

Hydroquinone works

Hydroquinone is the most potent ingredient for lightening skin, as it reduces dark spots by obstructing the enzyme that stimulates melanin production in the skin. To balance out sun damage, scars, and uneven skin tone, you may want to contemplate using a small amount of hydroquinone to attain the intended outcomes.

Green Tea Extract

The polyphenols in green tea combat free radicals and make it a powerful antioxidant. Research studies have demonstrated that green tea ingredients can reduce sun damage and potentially protect the skin against cancer when applied topically. Dr. Shah recommends using green tea extract under sunscreen for added protection. Creams and lotions that contain polyphenols can also help reduce signs of aging, sagging skin, and wrinkles.

THE ZEROES

Most anti-aging creams are still based on moisturizers such as mineral oil. Wrinkles look worse when dry, so any moisturizer helps, but it’s only temporary. It doesn’t address the root cause of the wrinkles, such as collagen loss, free radical damage, sun damage, and environmental factors. Don’t be fooled by the anti-aging labels. Unless there is an actual “active ingredient” such as retinol, the benefit is just moisture but nothing else.

B Vitamins

Eating leafy greens like spinach, asparagus, beans, and peas is the best way to improve your skin’s glow and appearance using vitamin B. The small intestine only absorbs many forms of vitamin B (like B12), so loading up on moisturizer or serum won’t make a difference. Dr. Shah explains that niacin can affect the skin’s texture and color, but you can’t absorb it. Stick to a healthy diet rich in vitamin B for vibrant, healthy skin.

Caffeine.

Caffeine in skin creams can boost your skin until it wears off, like a Starbucks Latte for your brain. Dr. Shah explains that caffeine can temporarily reduce puffiness, especially around your eyes, but you should not expect permanent results.

Botanical extracts

Did you know that plant-based ingredients such as flowers, roots, stems, and trees have been used for centuries in skincare to heal blemishes and reduce wrinkles? However, one issue with botanical extracts is that they need to remain on your skin to work effectively. According to Dr. Shah, using cleansers with botanical extracts may not provide enough skin contact time for anti-aging benefits. Additionally, most botanical extracts are water-soluble, which means that when you wet your skin to wash your face, they become diluted and ineffective.

Anti-wrinkle skincare products often contain collagen and elastin, effectively binding water to the skin. However, they cannot merge with the body’s natural supply of these supportive elements. The collagen molecule is generally too large to penetrate the skin, and even when it is minimized to be absorbed, it still cannot bind with the collagen in the skin. Extensive research has not found any evidence to the contrary.
