Conflicting Opinions and Misinformation
In my search for information, I asked older women in my family, including my mother and aunt, about their experiences with menopause. My gynecologist also told me my experience would resemble my mother’s. However, I was surprised when my aunt told me that she and my mother had just “dealt with it” and didn’t even notice the symptoms I had been experiencing for 15 years before my period stopped.
During my yearly check-up, I asked my doctor about my symptoms. She explained that I would be considered in menopause when I hadn’t had my period for a year. I also wondered if I would need hormone replacement therapy, like some women do.
To add to the confusion, one woman told me that I would need hormone replacement because she was using it. She even offered to set me up with a costly consultation with her doctor for hormone replacement therapy.
